Wrap the thread:
Wrap thread around your fingers to control the tension. (This is how I do it, do what feels comfortable/natural for you.)
This is for chains. Rings are shown at the end (start with two color chains so you can see the flip)
| Hold thread in a pinch |
1st Half of Double Stitch:
| "Scoop" shuttle thread over the back of your hand |
| Pass shuttle behind ball thread |
| continue to pass shuttle behind ball thread |
Bring shuttle around ball thread and back through the loop formed by scooping the thread over your hand. |
| The shuttle thread is now around the ball thread |
| Loosen tension from ball thread and pull shuttle thread |
| The threads now flip and the ball thread is around the shuttle thread |
| Tighten the ball thread tension |
| Slide stitch into place |
2nd Half of Double Stitch:
Insert shuttle away from yourself past the ball thread (between your palm and the ball thread) |
| Bring shuttle around ball thread and up through loop of shuttle thread |
| Pull shuttle all the way through |
| Shuttle thread is around ball thread |
| Loosen ball thread tension and pull shuttle thread tight |
| The thread flips to the ball thread being around the shuttle thread |
| Snug up to the other part of the stitch |
The wrap for rings:
Turn work so chains are upside down (known as "reverse work" in patterns) |
| Wrap the shuttle thread around your holding hand |
| Bring it all the way around your hand |
Add the thread to the pinch
You are now ready to start the stitches which are formed the same as for a chain. |
